Surprise for Deaf Restaurant Worker: Happy Birthday in Sign Language

“Erick is a breath of fresh air.”

For the last four and a half years, Erick Curry has worked as a busser at The Yard House in St. Louis Park, Minnesota.

A few weeks ago, KMSP TV reports, his co-workers wanted to let him know how much he means to them.

“I just thought it was important to show a team member that he is more than cared about on the floor,” said co-worker Kimberly Goettsche. “He’s cared about as a person, as a friend, as a family.”


Curry lost his hearing after surviving spinal meningitis as a baby. His co-workers mostly communicate with him through writing, but for his birthday, they wanted to do more.

“It was a mix of emotions,” Curry said. “I couldn’t stop crying. It was so great that they did that for me. I love it. I love that feeling. It’s like a family.”
