Russian Scientists Discover Mutations That Cause Usher Syndrome

Inherited disease causes deaf-blindness.

A team of scientists has discovered genetic mutations causing Usher syndrome (inherited deaf-blindness), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) reports in its online publication EurekAlert!

The researchers, from Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University (MSMU), along with colleagues from leading scientific centers of Moscow and India, found previously unstudied unique mutations in investigated DNA regions. The results of the study were published in the journal Ophthalmic Genetics.

Usher syndrome is an inherited disorder that accounts for almost a half of all cases of deaf-blindness and affects one in 6,000 American children.
