‘Sound of Metal’ follows a drummer whose life is thrown into free fall when he begins to go deaf.
In the Amazon Studios’ new film, Ruben (Riz Ahmed) is a former heroin addict and the drummer in a punk-metal band.
The movie, which begins streaming tomorrow, tells Ruben’s story as his hearing drastically diminishes.
The film won the Platform Prize at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival. Riz Ahmed learned both American Sign Language and how to play the drums for the lead role.
Writing in The New York Times, reviewer Jeannette Katsoulis observes, ” … this unusual movie diverts with an extraordinarily intricate sound design that allows us to borrow Ruben’s ears. From the sonic assault of his music to the hisses and crackles of his newly implanted devices — like an imperfectly tuned radio station — what Ruben hears seems as indistinct as his future.”
