Deaf Woman Offers Free Virtual ASL Classes During Pandemic

Sign language classes provide new experience during isolation.

A deaf woman from the Hudson Valley in New York is helping her community learn American Sign Language, Spectrum News reports.

Dr. Jennifer Delora is teaching her classes virtually now that her normal venue is closed to help slow the spread of the coronavirus.

“I wanted to offer something that was important for people to learn that they could enjoy. And that, again, fostered inclusion for everybody,” she said.

She offers free 30-minute American Sign Language classes online twice a week, along with a weekend sign-a-long to a popular tune.

“Why not offer the skills that I do have to people and let them have a new experience and learn something? And then maybe when this is all over, they may want to take classes where they live, and become more involved,” she said.
