3D Printed Cornea Tissue Used to Combat Blindness

Indian startup pioneers the use of a special hydrogel.

Pandorum Technologies, an Indian bioprinting startup, has recently used 3D printed cornea tissue to facilitate the healing of wounds in the eye, DocWire reports.

Using a novel hydrogel, the bioprinted tissue promotes scarless healing of wounds in the cornea through a regenerative process.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that corneal opacities accounted for 7 percent of all blindness in 2010, making the condition among the most common causes of blindness.

And it’s estimated that 20 percent of all childhood blindness is caused by corneal defects.

Since 12 million people are waiting for corneal transplants worldwide, 3D printing could be an alternative source of replacement corneas.
